The Hunt of the Unicorn Wall Tapestries
There are seven (7) tapestry wall hangings depicting the famous hunts for the unicorns that date back to the late 1400’s to early 1500’s. They tell the tales of noblemen in search of the unicorn with his mystic powers. This tapestry series was commissioned in celebration of the marriage of Charles VIII, the King of France and Anne of Brittany. It is Christian and pagan symbolism that these myths are based upon in interpretation and that is of the Virgin Mary and Christ’s relationship with her. You see it’s the fair maiden in this series of The Hunt of the Unicorn Wall Tapestries that is the only one who can tame the wild and wickedly smart unicorn.
The La Rochefoucauld family of France owned this tapestry series for centuries until J. D. Rockefeller, jr. purchased them in 1922. He made a donation to The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1937 and they are currently they are housed in The Cloisters, which is a well known museum for Medieval Collections.
